Camping in the Wilds of your Living Room

Summertime is in full swing, and while the kids have a little time off before school starts up again, we may not have time to go camping at a typical campsite. So- what to do? Why not camp in the wilds of your living room or backyard? Kids can make a night of it and have a mini vacation. There’s also something to be said about leaving the bugs and rocks & heat outside and having your own cozy pillow and blanket. Here are some suggestions on how to set up a cozy spot inside plus some fun menu items and a cool camping lantern craft to make.

Tents and Pillow forts:

Lots of kids have easy to set up pop-up tents which are perfect for

this sort of fun activity. Simply decide where you want your “camp site” to be set up and pitch your tent. Don’t despair if you don’t have a pop up tent. You can easily construct a makeshift tent using the corner of a room or sofa sectional, a folding table and a large tarp or bed sheet. Just place the table in the corner next to a sofa or even in the corner of the room and cover with your tarp or bed sheet. Add pillows and drag out the sleeping bags or just pillows and blankets. Add a camping lantern and you are set. Check out our neat camping lantern

craft for directions on how to make your own.

What’s on the menu:

Easy to make finger food for dinner makes a camping adventure fun. My kids love pizza so I decided instead of grilling pizzas, we would make foil wrapped pizza sandwiches. I like this idea because they are less messy, you can make them ahead of time and they are delish. As for the grownups, I made a sandwich twist on Chicken Parmesan with mozzarella and fresh basil – sooo yummy! For dessert we went with a popular favorite - Camping Cones. Waffle cones filled you’re your choice of marshmallows, fruits, nuts, candies or chocolate chips, wrapped in foil and baked until melted. Excuse me while I wipe the drool. These are definitely a once in a while treat – but oh so tasty! Get the recipes here:
