Take Your Shot Disk Game!
Take Your Shot Disk Shooting Game!
Here’s a super fun game to make that’s perfect for when you are looking for a fast-paced game you can make with recycled materials. We used a large box from Costco, rubber bands, and bottle tops to create a disk shooter game. It’s so fun! Check out our other Kidfunideas games too.
What you'll need:
-
One heavy-duty cardboard box that does not have flaps on the bottom.
-
Construction paper or cardstock – any color
-
Scissors
-
Tape
-
Rubber bands
-
10 plastic bottle caps from water bottles, Gatorade, or milk jugs (do not use metal bottle caps for this)
-
Paper clips
How to make it: (version one- using a box with tabs at the top)
-
Make sure you are using a flat bottom box that does not have flaps on the bottom. Most flat bottom boxes from your big box stores have a flat bottom and tabs of some sort on the sides. We are using a tomato box from Costco.
-
Connect together some rubber bands using a slip knot chain technique until you have enough rubber bands together to span across the narrow side of your box. Because rubber bands and box sizes vary, this will be different for everyone.
-
Once you have your rubber band chain, thread it through the opening at the bottom end of one end of the box and attach it to the flap on top of the box edge by looping the rubber band over the tab.
-
Take the other end of the rubber band chain and run it through the opposite hole on the other side of the box, threading it through the hole on the bottom of the box and looping it over the tab on the side of the box. Repeat this for the other end of the box so you have two rubber band chains on your box.
-
Next, you will need to make the divider between the two rubber band chains. We used a big box so we cut out three openings in the bottom of the divider. Make your divider the same width as the inside narrow diameter of the box and about 6” high. We covered ours in green paper and wrote Take Your Shot! on the divider.
-
For the game disks, we used 10 Gatorade lids and gave each player 5 disks. We also drew stars on five of them and lightning bolts on 5.
To play the game: Each player has 5 game pieces. Have someone say ready, set, go and each player puts one of their disks in front of the rubber band chain. Pull back the rubber band slightly and try and launch your disk through one of the holes in the center divider. Whoever gets all of their disks and their opponent’s disks onto their opponents’ side of the box wins. If you shoot your disk and it goes off the game board the player who shot it must pick it up and return it to their side.
Version 2: (Making this game with a box without tabs)
-
If you cannot find a heavy-duty box with tabs like the one above, you can still use a heavy-duty flat box like the kind that holds water bottles.
-
Connect together some rubber bands using a slip knot chain technique until you have enough rubber bands together to span across the narrow side of your box. Because rubber bands and box sizes vary, this will be different for each box.
-
Take your box and on either side of the box on the wide side, create a small hole with a sharpened pencil about 4 inches from the narrow end of the box. Thread one end of your rubber chain through the hole you made.
-
To secure your rubber band on the outside of the box, attach a paper clip through the end of the rubber band chain. Repeat this for the other end of the box.
-
Create your divider for the box by making it the same diameter as the inside narrow width of the box and about 6” high. If your box is not very strong you can tape your divider into place on either side. If you have a smaller box, you can make 1-2 holes in your divider instead of 3 from example 1.
Game pieces and rules for the game are the same as for the box in version 1.
